Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish admits he thought he was going to complete a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur last summer

Jack Grealish admits he thought he was going to be a Tottenham Hotspur player at the start of the season.

However, ten months on, the boyhood Aston Villa fan captained his side to a Championship Play-Off final win at Wembley.

After tasting defeat at the famous ground to Fulham last season, Villa were plunged into financial difficulties and Grealish looked certain to move to north London.

However, an influx of money from the new owners and a five-year contract convinced the attacker to stay at Villa Park and he told Ian Abrahams just how glad he is with how the situation unfolded.

He said: “I thought I was gone as well! That’s why I was waving goodbye to the fans, but I think everything happens for a reason.

“Especially after this season; I ended up staying, scored twice against the Blues, dreams come true!”

Goals from Anwar El Ghazi and John McGinn set the Villans on course for a 2-1 victory over Derby County on Monday, with Grealish at the heart of everything Villa tried to implement.

And after making his Premier League bow five years ago, the 23-year-old is eager to show how much he has improved.

“Honestly, I am absolutely speechless,” Grealish told ‘The Moose’. “It is just a dream come true for me.

“I started the season not even thinking I was going to be a Villa player and ten months on I am here now.

“I’m the captain and we are back in the Premier League.”

With Villa fan Dean Smith in charge and Grealish wearing the captain’s armband, it seemed victory was written in the stars before a ball had even been kicked at Wembley.

And the midfielder never allowed nerves to get the better of him.

“Honestly, the best day of my life – I can’t explain it,” he added.

“All I want to do was come out here and win, I didn’t want to think about too much after. I just wanted to come out here, treat it as a normal game.

“Obviously it’s hard when you’re playing at Wembley in front of all the fans and stuff. But, at the end of the day, we got the win and I think we deserved it.”

What clubs has he played for?

Bruno Fernandes started off with Portuguese side Boavista but did not play any first-team games for them.

He joined Serie B side Novara in 2012, making 23 appearances in his first season before Udinese signed him on a co-ownership deal and nurtured his talents for three seasons, where he scored 11 goals in 95 games.

A season at Sampdoria followed before an £7million transfer to Sporting before the 2017/18 season.

He enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last term, bagging 31 goals in 50 appearances for the Portuguese giants.

What is his style of play?

Fernandes is a central midfielder who has been compared to Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos.

He likes to play further up the pitch to create chances for his attackers, playing through balls and shooting from distance.

Ex-United boss Jose Mourinho recently admitted he’s been ‘surprised’ by the superb performances of his compatriot in recent months.

“I was surprised by the season of Bruno,” he told Eleven Sports. “It was easy to predict quality, he is a very good player, but scored a very high number of goals for a midfield player.

“It shows that you need to have instinct and qualities to score and he has it all.

“He strikes the ball well, heads well, cool when he is one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He finds space in the penalty area. It’s all there.”

International career

Fernandes did not receive his first call up until in 2017 but was in Portugal’s World Cup squad and has 11 caps for his country, scoring once.

Who are interested in him?

United have been keeping tabs on him in recent weeks and head up a list of English big guns in the hunt for his signature.

However, it has been suggested recently that the Red Devils are frontrunners for him and may even submit a bid in the region of £62m this summer.

Serbia went forward after 11 minutes and their first corner bounced off the back of two players to land perfectly for Luka Jovic to head in for his first international goal.
The 21-year-old, who has scored 22 goals in 35 appearances for Eintracht Frankfurt this season, is likely to be among the biggest transfer targets this summer, with Real Madrid and Barcelona among clubs reportedly interested.
Werner twice went close to an equaliser before Serbia, who won promotion in the Nations League after an undefeated run in their group, wasted a chance when Adem Ljajic fired a shot over the bar.
But the Germans kept their foot firmly on the gas and wasted several chances in the second half before substitute Leon Goretzka grabbed a deserved equaliser in the 69th minute.
"In the first half the automation in this new team, playing together for the first time, did not function that well," Loew told reporters.
"In the second half the team sent a very good signal that we can increase pressure and we can increase the tempo. We had a lot of chances and we missed the final touch a bit. That is also part of the learning experience.
"Overall, I am very satisfied with the mentality, the pressure we created." Serbia, who had Dmitrovic to thank for hanging on to the draw as the keeper made several saves to deny the Germans a second goal, were left with 10 players when Milan Pavlov was sent off for a reckless challenge on Sane.
The Manchester City winger was taken off but Loew said his injury was not too serious and he would be fit for Sunday.
"It was a vicious foul. Sane was lucky and got away with not getting hurt but such fouls can break bones."

The Premier League referee, a lifelong fan of the Rovers, was seen celebrating in the stands once again, after previously being spotted during the semi-final against Forest Green.

At Wembley, Connor Jennings scored in the final 90 seconds of extra time to earn Tranmere a 1-0 victory against ten-man Newport.

The final was heading to penalties after a scrappy game of few chances, but Jennings headed home to break the deadlock and send Rovers back to the third tier for the first time since 2014.

With the Premier League season over, Dean was able to enjoy his day out as his side secured back-to-back promotions.

Chelsea fans have responded to Manchester City after the Premier League champions tweeted out a video of Frank Lampard – with the caption ‘City legend.’

After spending 13 years at Chelsea, winning numerous trophies including three league titles, Lampard left the club in 2014.

After agreeing a proposed move to New York City FC, he would then controversially join City, with his first ever goal for the club being a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw with the Blues.

The Derby County manager also netted for City in his final game against Southampton, and the club tweeted a video of the goal on Friday as an ‘On This Day’ post.

City also managed to rile up Chelsea fans everywhere with the caption they used on the post.

The Premier League champions called Lampard a ‘City legend’, but use of the eyes emoji shows they knew exactly what kind of reaction this would get.

Chelsea fans across the globe got pretty annoyed by City’s Twitter post, and you can see some of the best responses below.

While there may be plenty of debate regarding Lampard‘s legendary status at City, there is no doubt he is a true Chelsea legend.

In 648 appearances he scored 211 times, a club record, and captained the Blues in their Champions League and Europa League final victories.

Lampard’s first season in management has seen him take Derby to the Championship play-off final after a heroic effort by overturning a first leg deficit away from home against Leeds.
