Manchester United: Red Devils on course for worst home clean sheet haul in 50 years

It’s been a season to forget for Manchester United.

The Red Devils have lost nine matches this term and sit precariously in sixth position, with a Champions League spot for next season looking increasingly unlikely.

De Gea is going through a terrible patch of form

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought the feel good factor back to Old Trafford following his arrival, but United have slumped back to the form they were showing under Jose Mourinho for the first half of the season, losing seven of their last ten matches.

Perhaps the most alarming stat is United’s lack of clean sheets this season, particularly at home.

In the three seasons previous to this campaign, the Red Devils topped the clean sheets charts.

This season, they have extraordinarily managed the least in the whole division.

Home clean sheets PL 18/19

Liverpool – 11

Chelsea – 9

Everton – 8

Manchester City – 8

Crystal Palace – 7

Arsenal – 7

Tottenham Hotspur – 7

Wolves – 7

Cardiff – 5

Burnley – 5

Bournemouth – 5

Brighton – 5

Newcastle – 5

Watford – 4

Fulham – 3

Huddersfield – 3

Southampton – 3

West Ham – 3

Manchester United – 2

David de Gea’s error against Chelsea on Sunday means United have managed just two clean sheets at Old Trafford this campaign, their worst tally since the 1962/63 season.

In that season, they kept two clean sheets in 21 home games, giving them on average a clean sheet in 9.5 per cent of their games.

This season they have kept a clean sheet in just 11 per cent of games at home and incredibly the relegated Huddersfield and Fulham have managed more.

Their away form has been better, however, having tallied up five clean sheets on the road.

Overall, they have kept the third least clean sheets in the league – level with Southampton, Brighton and Watford on seven.

United will have one more attempt to hold the opposition at bay at Old Trafford when they face Cardiff on the final day of the season – but with the Bluebirds fighting relegation and Solskjaer’s men winless in four, you wouldn’t back against Neil Warnock’s side to snatch a goal.
