Every game now a 'Final'

Every game now a 'Final'

LONDON ̢ۢ There were moments on Thursday night when Pep Guardiola looked like a man on the edge.
He was pacing back and forth on the touchline, fretting, chewing at his nails, doing little jumps, holding his head in his hands, throwing a scarf down in frustration and finally, in the closing stages, turning to the Manchester City fans and imploring them to turn up the volume.
At times, he even made his opposite number Jurgen Klopp look calm, which takes some doing.
The 2-1 English Premier League win over leaders Liverpool was not quite a must-win game, but that was certainly how it looked and felt.
City, favourites to retain the league title just three weeks ago, played as if their lives depended on it, desperate to quell Liverpool's uprising and to reduce the deficit at the top of the table from seven points to a less daunting four.
Following this mini-revival, Guardiola knows that every game from now on is a "final".
"We knew that if we won, we would be in contention to fight for the Premier League; if we lost, it is over," the Spaniard said.

"I don't remember a league so tough. There are so many huge contenders fighting for the title. It is closer, every game is a final."
In a match that lived up to its billing played in a wonderful atmosphere at the Etihad Stadium, Sergio Aguero put City ahead with a brilliant strike and, after Roberto Firmino had equalised, Leroy Sane inflicted Liverpool's first league defeat of the season with a low shot off the post in the 72nd minute.
"Losing today, it was almost done," Guardiola reiterated.
"Ten points, with goal difference 11 points, so difficult to be honest to turn that situation, but now we are four points behind them.
"We have to fight a lot, but four points is enough to be calm and it is a good moment to congratulate and say 'thank you' to these incredible players.
"Today they show how good they are, they played against an incredible team."

GREAT JOB, GUYS
We went toe to toe with a very physical, very aggressive team and we matched them, if not more. The performance was beyond anything I've ever witnessed.
VINCENT KOMPANY, Manchester City captain, praising his men.

Widely praised for their neat, precise passing, City showed they can also roll up their sleeves on Thursday, working feverishly all over the pitch to pressurise the visitors whenever they were in possession.
"It was important we played with courage," Guardiola said, while also lauding Aguero for having scored in all seven of his home league games against Liverpool.
"We were so aggressive in our pressing, as we knew how complicated it was, and we know how incredibly fast they are when they get in behind - so dangerous.
"We created a lot of chances. Liverpool don't concede goals and we scored two."
City captain and centre-back Vincent Kompany said: "I'm absolutely buzzing with a tremendous performance. We went toe to toe with a very physical, very aggressive team and we matched them, if not more.
"The performance was beyond anything I've ever witnessed.
"It came from the gut, the 12th man is more than just the fans, it's a desire, something from within you can't describe and today it was there and we are a better team when we play with emotion."
He was, however, fortunate to escape with only a yellow card for a studs-up lunge that caught Mohamed Salah. But he said there was no intention to hurt the striker.
"I thought it was a great challenge, was it not? I got the ball, a bit of the man, I didn't try to injure him that's for sure," said the Belgian.

He has made 40 appearances so far this term, scoring once and registering four assists.

The 23-year-old said: “It means a lot especially coming from the lads.

“They’ve always stuck by me when other people haven’t and they’ve always helped me along my rough journey, but it’s brilliant, and of course thanks to them all for voting.

Former Arsenal star says he is ‘delighted’ Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got Man United job – as rivals will NEVER win Premier League title under ‘supply teacher’

Former Arsenal star Perry Groves is ‘delighted’ Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has become the permanent manager of Manchester United, because he believes they will NEVER will the Premier League title with the Norwegian in charge.

On Thursday, Solskjaer signed a three-year contract to take the United helm on a full-time basis, after an impressive three months as caretaker.

Ole’s at the wheel – and this time it’s permanent

The Red Devils have recorded 14 victories, two draws and three defeats in 19 games under the former striker – they have also claimed the most number of points of any Premier League team since he succeeded Jose Mourinho in December.

It appears there are clear skies ahead for the club after Mourinho̢۪s stormy exit, but doubts have been raised over whether Solskjaer can enjoy long-term success at Old Trafford.

And Groves believes the Red Devils will struggle to mount a title challenge with the ‘baby-faced assassin’ in charge – which can only be good news for his beloved Arsenal.

â€Å“Solskjaer has signed his new contract and all the United fans are delighted, but so am I as a Gooner,” the ex-winger told talkSPORT host Jim White.

â€Å“I don’t think they’ve got any chance of winning the title while he’s their manager.

â€Å“He doesn’t have the skill set or the experience.

Football: Iran coach Carlos Queiroz set for Colombia switch after Asian Cup

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Iran coach Carlos Queiroz said on Friday (Jan 18) that he was "honoured" to be courted by Colombia, who want the former Real Madrid boss to join them after the Asian Cup.
But the Portuguese, who has been Iran coach for eight rollercoaster years, insisted that he remains committed to bringing Asian football's biggest prize back to the country for the first time in more than 40 years.
"There's no doubt that Colombia expressed its interest and confidence in me," Queiroz told AFP in an interview before Iran face Oman in the last 16 at the weekend.
"It is an unbelievable national team with fantastic players and a very high Fifa ranking (12) - it's prestigious, an honour and something that makes me very proud.
"But at the moment my responsibility is with Iran," added the 65-year-old, who almost steered Iran to the knockout stages of last year's World Cup in Russia.
"After the Asian Cup I will take into consideration for sure Colombia's invitation."
Despite Team Melli's strong World Cup showing, Iranian football authorities opted not to offer him a new four-year contract - a decision that stung the former Portugal coach.
"I was a little bit surprised to be honest," he admitted. "These circumstances weren't created by me - it was the decision of the federation.
"Coaches have their futures in the hands of presidents," shrugged Queiroz.
"They want to move in another direction and for sure I will find another solution too."
Iran are joint Asian Cup favourites with South Korea and Queiroz praised the desire and determination shown by his players despite the turmoil caused by sanctions imposed on the country.
"I try to select players who put the shirt above everything," he said.
"You can never compromise with attitude and character. Either you have loyalty, courage, attitude - or you don't. You can't buy it," added Queiroz, whose team are expected to prove too strong for Oman in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.
"People are suffering with these emotional sanctions that are affecting the country and society. But when you live together with these fantastic people and the spirit they have, you fall in love."
While breaking up is never easy, Queiroz feels a special bond with the Iran players.
"I never saw players delivering so much and receiving so little," he said in a thinly veiled dig at Iranian officials.
"I love the players - they never quit, they are strong characters, they always want to improve, they fight. They are so dedicated to the country and the shirt. This is probably one of the strongest football families I ever met in my life."
Iran's failure to lift the Asian Cup since completing a hat-trick of victories in 1976 is something of a mystery.
But Queiroz's players look capable of ending that title drought after topping Group D, where victories over Yemen and Vietnam were followed by a goalless draw with bitter rivals Iraq.
"Nobody puts more pressure on us than me and our players," insisted Queiroz.
"But we won't fall into the trap of becoming tense, or lose control, because of the dreams that we have in front of us."

Premier League stars to boycott social media for 24 hours in protest at online racism with the likes of Sterling, Salah and Smalling backing campaign

Leading Premier League players have backed plans for a 24-hour social media boycott in protest at an escalation of incidents of racial abuse online.

The campaign, which has been launched by the Professional Footballers’ Association, will urge players to stay off social media from 9am on Friday after posting the hashtag #Enough.

The PFA say it is intended as a show of solidarity with players who have been targeted, as well as a demand to social media organisations and the game’s authorities that more needs to be done.

Simone Pound, Head of Equalities at the PFA, said: “Football has the power to do so much good in the world. We must always try to use the sport’s popularity and influence to make positive change.

“Over the last few months we have seen a rise in appalling instances of racist abuse at grounds around the world, and on social media. We cannot stand by while too little is done to address this unacceptable behaviour.

“The PFA has always been at the forefront of tackling racism and we are reaffirming our commitment to all of our members. We will do all we can to put an end to the abuse players face on the pitch and online.”

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has given his strong backing to the campaign after he was abused on Twitter after his side’s Champions League defeat in Barcelona this week.

Smalling joins a lengthening list of players, also including Mohamed Salah, Danny Welbeck, Raheem Sterling, Michy Batshuayi, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Moussa Sissoko, who have received abuse over the same platform in recent years.

Smalling said: “Throughout my career I have developed a thick skin against verbal abuse, justifying it as just ‘part of the game’ but the time has come for Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to consider regulating their channels, taking responsibility for protecting the mental health of users regardless of age, race, sex or income.

“I understand that I am in an extremely privileged position and I am deeply thankful for that but, at the end of the day, we are all human.

“As a patron of a youth education charity it is my duty to use my platform as a voice for all, regardless of background. We have to take a greater stand against discrimination of all kinds.”

Concern is mounting over racism in football after a spate of attacks on players both on social media and in and around stadiums.

England’s black players were subjected to repeated chants during their Euro 2020 qualifier in Montenegro last month, while Tottenham defender Danny Rose revealed recently he has ‘had enough’ and ‘can’t wait’ to quit the game.

Rose said: “When I said that I can’t wait to see the back of football, it is because of the racism that I, and many other players, have been subjected to our entire careers.

“Football has a problem with racism.

“I don’t want any future players to go through what I’ve been through in my career.

“Collectively, we are simply not willing to stand by while too little is done by football authorities and social media companies to protect players from this disgusting abuse.”

Champions League final iconic moments no.4: Zinedine Zidane’s thunderous volley for Real Madrid against Bayer Leverkusen in 2002

Ahead of the 2019 Champions League final, talkSPORT.com is looking back at some of the most memorable moments from previous finals.

Liverpool face Tottenham in an all-English final for the first time since 2008, when Manchester United beat Chelsea on penalties to win the trophy.

Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino have been criticised for failing to win silverware with the Reds and Spurs, respectively, but one of them will end the season with European football’s biggest prize.

It is set to be an entertaining final with Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah going head-to-head on June 1.

No.4 – Zinedine Zidane’s volley

Both Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen had to get through gruelling knock-out matches to progress to the final stage of the competition.

Real overcame Bayern Munich and Barcelona to reach the final, which was held at Hampden Park in Glasgow, while Leverkusen knocked-out both Liverpool and Manchester United on their way to the showpiece event.

Los Blancos took the lead within ten minutes when Raul nipped behind the defence to trickle his shot past Jorg Butt.

Zidane’s volley was a moment of pure brilliance

But Bayer, who had an immensely talented squad at the time, responded just four minutes later when Brazil legend Lucio equalised for the German club, rising highest to head home from a superb cross from Bernd Schneider.

Leverkusen put in a spirited display but unfortunately they came up against a youthful Iker Casillas, who had come on as a substitute earlier on in the game and was in inspired form during his cameo appearance.

Ultimately it was one moment of sheer brilliance that decided the tie.

On the stroke of half-time, Zidane produced a goal that has been heralded as one of the best in the competition’s history.

An attack down the left-flank saw Roberto Carlos swing a lofted ball to the France international on the edge of the box.

Most players would have tried to control the ball and look for another pass, but Zidane was not like most players.

The midfielder expertly swivelled his body and lashed a venomous left-footed volley into the very top corner.

Zidane got his hands on the Champions League trophy

There was nothing that Butt could do to deny Zizou and the goal crucially proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Real Madrid lifted their ninth European Cup, something they would not do again until 12 years later where Carlo Ancelotti guided Los Blancos to ‘La Decima’ in 2004.

For the German team, a season that promised so much ended heartbreakingly trophyless.
