Manchester City moved back to the top of the Premier League table after a 2-0 defeat over rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Goals from Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane ensured Liverpool slipped to second place in the Premier League with just three games to go and the gap now to one point.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side put in a strong performance and contained the visitors in the first half, but the quality from City prevailed in the end.
Liverpool will now take on Huddersfield Town on Friday night, before Pep Guardiola’s men take on Burnley at Turf Moor.
After making it 11 straight Premier League victories in a row on Wednesday night, few would bet against the Citizens retaining their title.
The game started at a frenetic pace and City initially struggled to get into their rhythm, needlessly giving the ball away on several occasions.
However, they began to look menacing as half time approached, with Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva testing David De Gea.
The visitors were dealt a cruel blow as Fernandinho was taken off with suspected knee ligament damage, but the substitution effectively changed the game.
With Leroy Sane providing width on the left and both Silva’s deployed through the middle, United fell behind thanks to the Portugal midfielder’s rasping drive at the near post.
Substitute Sane doubled the lead in the 65th minute after a counter attack by the visitors ended with De Gea inexplicably deflecting the German’s drive into the net.
Moments before, Jesse Lingard missed a glorious chance to level the game with the goal seemingly gaping. This moment perhaps best summed up the hosts as they lacked the cutting edge to truly rival their ‘noisy neighbours’.
United tried to find a way back into the match, with substitute Romelu Lukaku testing Ederson, but City showed the composure to hold on.
The defeat was United’s seventh in their last nine games in all competitions – their worst run since 1962.
STAR MAN – David Silva
Once City settled at Old Trafford, they looked dangerous on the break and in possession. And the architect behind that was their silky Spaniard.
His namesake may have got the goal, but the former Valencia man got on the ball and moved it past the static United midfielders.
And when required, the 33-year-old got back and defended for his side – a true role model for the next generation of City starlets.
