The referee, Amand Ancion, said Wallwork pinned him up against a wall in the tunnel, while Higginbotham was also said to have laid his hands on him.

And the defender-turned-pundit has sensationally revealed the FIFA-listed official got someone to put marks on his neck and took photos of them.

Wallwork, 21 at the time, was facing a lifetime exclusion from the game, while a 20-year-old Higginbotham was looking at three years in Belgium and 12 months in England.

While the nightmare unfolded, United boss Sir Alex flew to Belgium to throw his support behind the two youngsters and offered them both new four-year contracts.

As the truth became clear, the bans were eventually quashed.
