James Ward-Prowse deserves a place in the England squad thanks to his ‘outstanding’ performances for Southampton, says St Mary’s legend Matt Le Tissier.
The midfielder missed out in a spot in the original squad for Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic and Montenegro, but was drafted in by Gareth Southgate on Monday after injuries to Fabian Delph and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Ward-Prowse was England Under-21s captain under Southgate and was first promoted to the senior squad in March 2017, making his debut against Germany.
The 24-year-old’s return to the senior team is a reward for his brilliant form in a Saints shirt under new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.
He has six goals from his last nine games for Southampton, including a match-winning free kick against Tottenham.
“He deserves it,†Southampton hero Le Tissier told talkSPORT on Tuesday’s Sports Breakfast.
“For the last couple of months he has been outstanding. Every time I’ve seen him he’s putting in man-of-the-match performances.
“His work rate has gone up a couple of notches, he’s much more aggressive on the pitch now in terms of getting close to players and getting tackles in and he quality of his goals have been outstanding.
“I know James, he’s a lovely lad and it’s been brilliant to watch somebody with that ability to now step up to free-kicks like that. He’s taken them for quite a long time and he always had fantastic technique, but they always went just the wrong side of the post or they hit the post, just nothing would go in for them.
“But, all of a sudden, the new manager has come in and he’s given him a bit of a new direction, a bit of confidence and a bit of belief and we’ve seen what that’s done to him, he’s been outstanding.â€
