Arsenal legend Ray Parlour ‘amazed’ by Alexis Sanchez’s decline and shocked by reports Manchester United could PAY forward £12m to leave

Ray Parlour has told talkSPORT he is ‘amazed’ by Alexis Sanchez’s decline since he left Arsenal to join Manchester United.

The Chilean is reportedly set to leave Old Trafford this summer after a torrid 16 months at Old Trafford, where he is no longer in the first-team picture.

Sanchez arrived to a great fanfare in January 2018, signing a four-and-a-half year contract at £500,000-per-week.

But the forward, who boasted an incredible scoring record for the Gunners, has been a huge flop for the Red Devils.

The 30-year-old was directly involved in 125 goals (scoring 80, assisting 45) in 166 games for Arsenal. He has managed just five goals and nine assists for United, however.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is preparing for a summer clear out, which Sanchez is widely expected to be a part of, and latest reports claim the club could have to pay the forward £12million for him NOT TO PLAY for them next season.

According to the Daily Mirror, Inter Milan are interested in taking Sanchez on a season-long loan, but United would still have to pay half his wage – £250,000-a-week.

Those reports outraged Sports Breakfast host Alan Brazil who said on Wednesday morning: “Is that not what is wrong with football? £12million NOT to play? That’s a king’s ransom! It’s a joke, I’m sick of it!”

But co-host Parlour conceded the game has been this way for a while, and revealed his shock at how Sanchez’ career has spiralled.

“Football went that way a long time ago,” said the Arsenal legend.

“There have been so many players who have been frozen out but they’re on such good contracts that they say, ‘OK, I’ll sit in the reserves for three years’. Winston Bogarde is a prime example.”

Bogarde said of his Chelsea career: “Why should I throw €15m away when it is already mine? At the moment I signed it was in fact my money. I used to be poor as a kid… so when you are offered those millions you take them. Few people will ever earn so many. I am one of the few fortunates who do. I may be one of the worst buys in the history of the Premiership, but I don’t care.”

I may be one of the worst buys in the history of the Premiership, but I don’t care.”

Former Chelsea defender Bogarde famously made just nine league appearances in four years at Stamford Bridge. The Dutchman was not wanted by manager Claudio Ranieri but decided to stay and honour his £40,000-a-week contract, which he felt he could not earn at another club.

Parlour continued: “You get that happening because they’re not going to get that money anywhere else.

“For me, you have to play as a footballer. That’s your living, that’s where you get a buzz.

“Alexis Sanchez was brilliant at Arsenal, but it just hasn’t clicked for him at United.

“When he signed for them, I’ve got a few Man United mates and I said to them: ‘You’ve got some player there, he’s certainly going to improve you a lot’.

“I’m amazed to see what has happened to his career.”
