Manchester United sell out all 52,000 season tickets in record time despite poor 2018/19 campaign

Manchester United may have had a wretched, trophyless season but it has not stopped the Premier League club from selling out their 2019/20 season tickets in record time.

Having sacked Jose Mourinho in December, United put legendary striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in temporary charge of first-team affairs.

After a brief revival under the Norwegian, who was then appointed on a permanent basis in March, United would win just two more times, as well as suffering exits in the FA Cup and Champions League.

A dreadful campaign was brought to a close with a 1-1 draw at Huddersfield, followed by a dismal 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford by relegated Cardiff City on the final day, which only brought more criticism on the players, as they finished sixth – 32 points behind champions and rivals Manchester City.

Despite all of this, the club announced they have sold all of their 52,000 season tickets for the upcoming campaign, report the Daily Mail.

Old Trafford holds a maximum capacity of slightly over 75,731, and it was on average 98.4 per cent full throughout 2018/19. This was the sixth highest percentage of total stadium capacity in the Premier League for last season, though United blew all other top flight clubs out the water in terms of total attendance in 2018/19, with 1,415,471 people choosing to watch a league game at Old Trafford.

Former United player Danny Higginbotham believes Solskjaer’s squad lack only the fitness to properly carry out the Norwegian’s orders on the pitch – something that can be corrected over time.

He told Tuesday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “When Ole first came in there was a lot of adrenaline around and the team looked good, they looked strong.

“But then as the season went on it was plain and obvious for everyone to see – the players aren’t fit enough for Ole’s style.

“That doesn’t mean they’re not fit players, because you have different styles of football.

“If you took [Jurgen] Klopp or [Pep] Guardiola and got them to take over this United squad now, regardless of the different in quality between the groups of players, the United players can’t play in that way. It requires a different level of fitness.

“That’s the way Ole wants to play but Mourinho played a different way, so their fitness levels need to go up considerably because of the style of play Solskjaer wants to bring to the team.”
