Manchester United warned they will have ‘another horrible season’ if they splash the cash in summer transfer window

Manchester United have been warned they will have ‘another horrible season’ if they bring too many new players to the club this summer.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted he is not completely happy with his current squad and is keen to give it a facelift when the transfer window opens.

A number of players’ futures are uncertain, with David de Gea, Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku and a host of others linked with possible moves away from Old Trafford.

Club legend Solskjaer is unlikely to be left wanting for funds as he looks to build a side capable of closing the gap to rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.

But former Tottenham and Egypt striker Mido believes signing too many new stars would be a big mistake from the boss.

Speaking as a special guest on Tuesday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, he said: “If you make a lot of changes, you will have another horrible season.

“You have to make very minor changes, signing three or four players maximum and keep your best players and try to work on them.

“But to change the team completely, you will have another season like this one.

“The players know they have to do better, if you play for Manchester United you have to play better, you have to fight.”

Solskjaer has already found himself under pressure in the United hotseat, despite only signing a contract as United’s permanent manager four weeks ago.

The Red Devils seem to have fallen into the same slump of form and same mindset we saw towards the end of Jose Mourinho’s reign.

Solskjaer lifted a cloud when he came in as caretaker boss in December, taking the team on a run of eight straight wins and 11 games without losing.

But now, United have lost six of their last eight games in all competitions.

And Mido believes it all changed for Solskjaer the moment he signed that contract as the club’s new full-time boss.

“I always think the pressure really starts when you have the job permanently,” the former striker added.

“If you are a manager only there until the end of the season, ok there is always pressure if you’re managing a big club, but the pressure starts when you sign the contract.

“This is what has happened with Solskjaer, I think.

“He was so relaxed before he got the job permanently, you could see him at his interviews that he was just chilled.

“But now the pressure is really on because he has to think about the future.”

United’s last game ended in a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Everton.

Some may consider it the worst possible preparation for Wednesday’s derby clash against noisy neighbours Manchester City – but Mido believes United will ‘bounce back’ to beat their blue rivals.
