Philippe Coutinho’s comments from the time he completed his transfer from Liverpool to Barcelona have come back to haunt him.
The forward completed a £143million move to the Nou Camp in January 2018 but it does not seem to have held Jurgen Klopp’s side back.
One of the reasons he gave was that he wanted to ‘win big titles’.
Liverpool, though, went on to win the Champions League on Saturday when they beat Tottenham 2-0 in Madrid.
“Everyone knows that I wanted to come to Barcelona,” he said to 8tv’s ‘Fora de Joc’ programme.
“It wasn’t possible in the summer, but we worked so that it could be done in winter.
“I really want to win big titles, it was one of the reasons that made me sign for the club.
“I want to win as many as I can, I don’t have preferences.”
The Liverpool chairman, Tom Werner, believed Coutinho now regretted that decision to seek a move away from Anfield.
“I think he left Liverpool because he wanted to play for one of the two big Spanish clubs,” Werner told the Liverpool Echo.
“We tried to convince him that we had the club moving in the right direction and that he could experience big Champions League occasions by staying at Liverpool.
“I think he probably regrets his decision.”
