Tottenham vs Ajax: Ruthless Spurs will end Dutch side’s fairytale, says Liverpool Champions League hero Didi Hamann

Liverpool’s 2005 Champions League hero Didi Hamann says Tottenham will beat Ajax in the first leg of their semi-final clash to put one foot in their first ever European Cup final.

Spurs host the Dutch outfit at their recently opened new stadium this evening (Tuesday), knowing they come up against one of the surprise packages of the tournament.

Tottenham overcame remarkable odds to reach the Champions League semi-finals

Ajax have shocked everyone to reach the last-four having started their European campaign all the way back in July in the second qualifying round. They made it out of a group which featured Bayern Munich and Benfica, going unbeaten across their six matches, before beating Real Madrid and Juventus in the round of 16 and quarter-finals respectively.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are themselves a surprise package considering they had just one point after their opening three group stage matches, but the quarter-final defeat of Manchester City earlier this month proved Spurs deserve to be in the semi-finals.

And Spurs’ victory over Pep Guardiola’s side proves they have enough about them to secure victory over their Dutch opponents, Hamann believes.

Speaking to Racing Post, Hamann said: “Ajax have done incredibly well getting this far – they were unbeaten in a group which included Bayern Munich and then home-and-away victors over Real Madrid and Juventus.

“This is an incredible fairytale and they need untold praise for their achievements.

“But Tottenham were good enough to beat Manchester City and I see sheer ruthlessness from them. They can get an important home win.”

Hamann’s former side, Liverpool, are themselves hoping to book a place in this season’s Champions League final.

The Reds reached last season’s final where they lost to Real Madrid, and they will believe they can go one better this term and win the whole thing given the remarkable performances Jurgen Klopp’s side have put in throughout 2018/19.
