talkSPORT host Adrian Durham has praised Gareth Southgate for calling up Chelsea teenager Callum Hudson-Odoi to his England senior squad.
The 18-year-old has been drafted in for the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic and Montenegro in place of the injured Luke Shaw.
Monday’s announcement came as a surprise, especially given his bit-part role in the Chelsea team and the fact he has not yet even played for England’s Under-21s side.
Hudson-Odoi has been used sparingly by Blues boss Maurizio Sarri this season. He has played just 119 minutes of Premier League football and is yet to make a league start.
However, Southgate has clearly seen enough to award him a spot in his senior team and Mr Durham has put his support behind the move.
Speaking on Monday’s Drivetime, he said: “England have an incredibly successful youth set up, they’ve been winning things and getting to finals and Callum Hudson-Odoi has been a part of that – he was a runner up at the Under-17 Euros and a winner at the Under-17 World Cup in 2017.
“He hasn’t played for the Under-21s, but the best players do bypass the Under-21s – Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney, if they played a couple of games each for the Under-21s I’d be surprised – if you’re that good…
“People will look at the no Premier League starts and ask, ‘how can he get into the England team?’
“But Gareth Southgate knows this player better than Maurizio Sarri does!â€
