Tottenham Hotspur could only hold on for so long down to nine men against Bournemouth.
Eventually it was Nathan Ake who broke their hearts as he thudded home an injury time header but Spurs stars had worked hard for the chance of a 0-0 draw.
It had looked beyond them when Heung-Min Son was sent off for shoving Jefferson Lerma over after the Colombian trod on his foot.
And it got even worse when half-time substitute Juan Foyth was red carded for an awful challenge on Jack Simpson.
But they were resolute, restricting the Cherries to long shots and scuffed kicks in the penalty area.
In the end, though, Ake’s goals left their top four hopes on the ropes but how did their players rate today? Find out below.
LATEST FOOTBALL STORIES
Hugo Lloris – 7/10
The Frenchman came under-fire at set-pieces and then in the second-half once Spurs went down to nine men but dealt well with everything which came his way.
Kieran Trippier – 7/10
Saw several crosses and passes blocked in the first-half but more than made up for it with a manful defensive display in the second period.
Danny Rose – 7/10
A player who remained cool and collected despite the madness which appeared to afflict his team-mates. He made the right decision almost every time and had his name sung by his adoring fans when he smartly helped Spurs win time and space.
Toby Alderweireld – 4/10
An error towards the end of the first-half almost resulted in a goal and was booked for a lunge on Joshua King.
He was substituted at half-time for Juan Foyth due to the caution, which in the end turned out to be calamitous.
Davinson Sanchez – 6/10
Enjoyed an excellent start to the match against Callum Wilson and remained calm while all other around him lost their heads.
Eric Dier – 3/10
Looked sharper after his injuries and illness but then went off the rails dramatically.
He could easily have been sent off in the opening period for two bookable offences, while he may also have given away a penalty on another day.
No surprise he was hooked at half-time.
Moussa Sissoko – 6/10
Was the energy and smarts Spurs needed in midfield and did well in possession too, despite his lack of technique. In terms of passing
Christian Eriksen – 7/10
When all about him went wrong he was excellent defensively and in his attempts to get Tottenham forward.
Dele Alli – 6/10
His liveliest match in recent memory and welcome ahead of the match against Ajax. He was more conservative in the second period due to the red cards and it worked well as he remained disciplined.
Lucas Moura – 5/10
Had a battle with debutant Mark Travers and almost netted from the halfway line too. He got quieter as Spurs lost their heads but showed moments on the counter.
Heung-Min Son – 2/10
On the fringes for the first half-hour and was then sent off in dramatic circumstances for shoving Jefferson Lerma over after being trod on by the Colombian.
It was harsh but he allowed himself to outwitted by the South American and let down his team-mates.
Substitute: Juan Foyth – 0/10
His only contribution to the game was an immediate red card, which was deserved.
Substitute: Victor Wanyama – 5/10
An misplaced pass started his afternoon on the pitch and he ended up at centre-back due to Juan Foyth̢۪s red card. He did so well but then lost Nathan Ake at the vital moment which saw them lose the game.
